The Song Unsung

Have you ever heard the sound of a rose singing?
Oh darling I've been waiting to hear you sing
I saw a rose in my garden, the stubborn thing wouldn't bloom
I sang her songs day and night
Hoping my voice would help her rise

I brought her sunshine, I brought her rain
I brought her best sand from a distant plain
Still the silly stubborn thing wouldn't sing
Give it time I said, she needs love

The lilies cawes and the sunflowers wooed
But still my rose wouldn't sing.

So I wove her poetry from the depths of my soul
I gave her sap, from my veins
She was surrounded by her own like
And slowly I saw her opening up

They say that the last one to bloom
Is the most beautiful of them all
Her voice was the sweetest,
She sang pure and clear for all to hear

All nature stilled and even the wind
Didn't want to miss her special kiss
She was the best, the brightest one
I watched and waited, but she didn't pick me.

We all waited to hear her first song
She sang and she sang
But she didn't sing for me

Dancing With Wolves

Last night I spent
dancing with wolves
under the endless starlight
in the grace of a full moon

She smiled in benevolence
at our fevered craze.
We danced until dawn
lost in the madness.

How foolish we felt
under the gaze of the sun!
He showed everything that
the moon hid from us

I walked back home
my head hung low
Never again to
dance with wolves.

The Call

I first heard it in the wind,
heavy and soaked in
secrets that trees whispered
in a land across the sea
Where the wild still ruled.

Then came the messages from the waves
I heard it in the roar as they
crashed upon the shore, over and over
A rhythmic pattern that resonated
with every beat of my heart.

They were a summons,
A wild and dangerous magic,
Haunting the moments that existed
Between dreams and reality.

The call for an adventure
To the one that held my destiny.
Be Brave, have courage, they said
Venture into the unknown.

When sun caressed my skin
As felt it upon my face,
Its warmth, a kiss upon my lips
and I knew I could not rest
until my adventure was complete.

Bes't thou a dragon,
Bes't thou a ruler of the sky,
Bes't thou fierce and swift and mean,
Bes't thou free.

Play

Polite applause as the curtain rises
So appears the stage that is my life.
Colourful costumes and witty lines,
Are the ploys that define my trade.

The stage is painted with colour and light,
The stories are exciting and they are dull.
I have my audience ‘oohing’ and ‘aahing’
In all the right places.

At the end of the day, they shuffle out,
transported by the tales I weave.
I am alone on a barren platform.
Planning out a new storm.

There is a new tale each day,
And the seats fill up once again.
As the theatre comes alive,
With passion and drama.

Night Time

As the day turns to night thus ending itself
I step out to the night into cool, cool streets
Soaked in the rich, orange glow of the street lamps.
Here, after the sweltering heat of a busy day with
Honking cars and loud chatter, peace can prevail.
They invite me, with their cozy allure
Call me, to a world without chaos and confusion.
A simpler world with simpler needs and desires.
Somehow drawn to a land beyond time.
I walk through them, enriched by the humid yet fresh air
Feeling refreshed and renewed.
For here at the very end of the day,
When its work is done and none remains
Until it begins anew with its own trouble,
There’s nothing more left to do but
Look forward to the night’s brief respite.
And enjoy the still, still silence of the dark
Where nothing is impossible.

Chancing

Heavy gates shut, with a dull thud,
Closing off from the rest of the world,
A silent kingdom, unseen and unheard.
With passing time this empire crumbled.

A lone warrior, weary traversing paths,
Arrived by the closed gates that barr’d,
That nation of which he wished to belong.
He stood by the border beckoning them, unfurl!

For centuries closed, they opened ever slow,
Creaking and groaning reluctant to reveal.
But a small foothold was all he needed,
He thrust his foot and blast them wide open.

Into this realm through fallen streets he strode,
And sought to rebuild it into his own.

Chasing Hearts

A silent ray of moonlight falling yonder
On the pavement, illuminates a puddle, a
Sudden footstep breaks the reflection and
With a soft splash, shatters the silence.

A Hunter moves, swiftly and deadly, tracking
A victim too deceptive to capture.
A sound exploding into the silence alerts
The Hunter, he knew his prey had erred!

With determined hands and calm efficiency
And a pace to boot, he hurried through
The darkened street. He was close now
There’d be no mercy. He said to himself.

He caught up to her but she sauntered away.
His love would not escape and so he followed.

Poisoned

The forest grows, slowly, each year,
Aging trees, amassing wisdom and strength,
A harmony where there’s life without fear.
Who dares enter this sanctuary here?
This unwelcome stranger intrudes harmony,
Sowing the seeds of chaos in this haven
He strides through it destroying health
Poisoning rooted life and animal akin.
The flora consumes this toxin, this growing
Wildfire, consuming and affecting fauna akin.
Thus the sanctuary dies, slowly each year
Battling this infection it could not cure.
And eventually at, the end of its life,
As the forest breathed its very last,
The intruder returns and setting fire
To the withered remains, he stood by
Watching, as it burned. So he vanishes
With the dying flames, in search of
Another Eden for his gain…
